How to use this guide

This page covers aftercare instructions for every treatment performed at Kocaqi Dental Clinic. Find your treatment in the section below — each one includes a Do's and Don'ts list, a healing timeline, and notes on what to watch for.

If anything feels wrong, looks wrong, or simply doesn't feel right — contact us first. Do not wait and hope it resolves. Most post-treatment concerns are minor and easily managed remotely. Early contact prevents small issues from becoming larger ones.

Dental Implants · All-on-4 · All-on-6 · Single Implant

Implant Aftercare

The first 72 hours after implant surgery are the most important for healing. Following these guidelines consistently gives your implant the best possible foundation for successful osseointegration.

6–12 weeks to full integration
Do
  • Take all prescribed antibiotics for the full course — do not stop early even if you feel fine
  • Take pain relief as prescribed for the first 48 hours, even if you feel comfortable
  • Apply ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to the cheek for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water from 24 hours post-surgery, 3 times daily
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first 3 nights
  • Eat soft foods — yoghurt, soup, scrambled eggs, soft pasta — for 6 to 8 weeks
  • Brush teeth normally around the implant site after the first 24 hours, being gentle near the surgical area
  • Keep all follow-up appointments — remote or in-person
Don't
  • Do not smoke for a minimum of 2 weeks — ideally throughout the entire healing period. Smoking is the single biggest cause of implant failure
  • Do not rinse forcefully or spit for the first 24 hours — this disturbs the clot and delays healing
  • Do not drink through a straw for 48 hours post-surgery
  • Do not eat hard, crunchy, or chewy foods during the soft-food phase (6–8 weeks)
  • Do not drink alcohol for the first 72 hours — it interferes with healing and medication
  • Do not touch or probe the surgical site with your tongue or fingers
  • Do not exercise heavily for the first 5 days — elevated blood pressure can increase bleeding and swelling
What to expect — healing timeline
Days 1–3
Peak discomfort

Swelling and soreness peak at 48–72 hours. Bruising may appear. This is normal. Manage with prescribed medication.

Days 4–10
Rapid improvement

Swelling reduces significantly. Most patients need only OTC pain relief. Return to soft normal diet.

Weeks 2–6
Soft food phase

Healing continues invisibly. Maintain soft diet. No hard, crunchy, or chewy foods. Remote check-in recommended.

Weeks 6–12
Osseointegration

Implant fuses with bone. Normal diet gradually reintroduced. Progress photos sent to clinic for remote review.

Important: Some oozing from the surgical site in the first 24 hours is normal. Biting firmly on gauze for 30 minutes controls this. If bleeding is heavy or does not stop — contact us immediately.
Porcelain Veneers · Composite Bonding · Hollywood Smile

Cosmetic Treatment Aftercare

Your new veneers or bonding are fully set on the day they are placed, but the first 48 hours require some care to ensure the final result is exactly as intended.

48h critical settling period
Do
  • Brush gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush from day one — avoid hard scrubbing at the margins
  • Use a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste — whitening toothpastes are abrasive and will dull the surface over time
  • Floss daily — use a gentle gliding motion rather than snapping the floss down
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments for bite checking and polish
  • Wear your night guard (occlusal splint) if prescribed — it protects your veneers from grinding damage
  • Report any bite that feels "high" or uneven within the first week — this is easily adjusted
Don't
  • Do not bite into very hard foods (hard bread crusts, ice, nuts) directly with the veneered teeth — use the back teeth
  • Do not use your teeth as tools (opening packaging, biting nails, holding objects)
  • For composite bonding — avoid deeply coloured foods and drinks (coffee, red wine, turmeric) for the first 48 hours while the material fully sets
  • Do not use whitening toothpaste — ceramic and composite do not whiten, and abrasive pastes dull the surface
  • Avoid excessive alcohol-based mouthwashes — they can soften composite bonding over time
Sensitivity after veneers: Some cold sensitivity on prepared teeth is normal for 1–2 weeks. It resolves as the teeth remineralise. If sensitivity is severe or persists beyond 3 weeks — contact us.
Dental Crowns · Dental Bridges · Inlays & Onlays

Crown & Bridge Aftercare

Permanently cemented crowns and bridges are fully functional from day one. These guidelines protect the margins and the underlying tooth structure long-term.

24h cement setting time
Do
  • Brush normally from day one — a soft brush is ideal around the crown margins
  • For bridges: use a floss threader or interdental brush under the pontic daily to keep the gum healthy beneath it
  • Report any bite that feels high within the first few days — minor adjustments are quick and painless
  • Have crowns checked at regular dental visits — the margin where crown meets tooth is where decay can develop if plaque accumulates
Don't
  • Do not eat on the crown side for 30–60 minutes after cementation to allow full cement set
  • Do not bite hard or sticky foods for 24 hours after cementation
  • Do not use abrasive toothpastes — they scratch ceramic surfaces and dull the glaze over time
  • For bridges: do not snap floss down — thread through gently to avoid pulling on the bridge
Temporary crowns: If you are wearing a temporary crown between preparation and your second visit, avoid sticky or hard foods that could pull it off. If it comes off — keep it safe, do not re-cement with household glue, and contact us immediately.
Root Canal Treatment · Pulpotomy

Root Canal Aftercare

Root canal treatment eliminates infection and relieves pain, but the treated tooth needs protection and monitoring during the first days of healing.

3–5 days of post-treatment sensitivity
Do
  • Take prescribed antibiotics (if given) for the full course even if symptoms improve quickly
  • Take ibuprofen or prescribed anti-inflammatory as directed for the first 48–72 hours
  • Eat on the opposite side of the treated tooth until the final crown is placed
  • Proceed with the crown or restoration as soon as possible — a treated tooth without a crown is at risk of fracture
  • Brush and floss normally around the treated tooth
Don't
  • Do not chew on the treated tooth, especially with hard foods, until the crown is placed
  • Do not be alarmed by tenderness when biting for 3–5 days — this is normal post-operative tissue inflammation
  • Do not delay crown placement — an unprotected root canal treated tooth can fracture vertically, requiring extraction
  • Do not ignore persistent swelling or pain beyond 5 days — contact us if symptoms are worsening rather than improving
In-Office Whitening · Take-Home Programme

Teeth Whitening Aftercare

The first 48 hours after whitening are the most important for protecting your results and managing any sensitivity.

48h white diet period
Do
  • Follow the "white diet" for 48 hours — white or pale foods only (chicken, fish, rice, pasta with cream sauce, white cheese, water, milk)
  • Use the desensitising gel provided in your take-home kit if sensitivity occurs
  • Use the take-home maintenance trays every 3–6 months to extend the result
  • Brush with the fluoride toothpaste provided — avoid whitening toothpastes which cannot further whiten treated teeth
  • Stay well hydrated — water is your best friend after whitening
Don't
  • Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, soy sauce, curry, and berries for 48 hours — enamel pores are open and absorb pigment easily
  • Do not smoke for at least 48 hours post-treatment
  • Do not use coloured mouthwash for 48 hours
  • Do not eat acidic foods (citrus, vinegar) for 24 hours — they increase sensitivity
  • If sensitivity is severe — do not use the take-home trays until it resolves completely
Sensitivity is normal and temporary. Mild to moderate sensitivity for 24–48 hours is expected. It resolves as enamel rehydrates. Apply the desensitising gel in the provided tray for 20 minutes to accelerate relief.
Jaw Surgery · Tooth Extraction · Bone Grafting · Sinus Lift

Surgical Procedure Aftercare

Surgical procedures require a structured recovery period. Following these instructions consistently is the single most important factor in a smooth, complication-free healing process.

2–3 weeks initial recovery
Do
  • Take all prescribed medications for the full duration as directed
  • Apply ice packs (20 on / 20 off) to the surgical area for the first 24–48 hours
  • Sleep with head elevated on 2 pillows for the first week
  • Rinse very gently with prescribed chlorhexidine mouthwash from 24 hours post-surgery
  • Maintain a soft, nutrient-rich diet throughout the prescribed healing period
  • Keep follow-up appointments — even remotely — so healing can be monitored
  • Rest for the first 3–5 days — your body needs energy for healing
Don't
  • Do not smoke — ever, but especially not during healing. Smoking dramatically increases infection and graft failure rates
  • Do not rinse forcefully or spit for 24 hours post-surgery
  • Do not drink through a straw for 72 hours
  • Do not eat hard, hot, or spicy foods during the healing phase
  • Do not take aspirin unless prescribed — it thins the blood and increases bleeding risk
  • After sinus lift: do not blow your nose forcefully for 4 weeks. Sneeze with your mouth open
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 7–10 days
Surgical recovery timeline
Hours 1–24
Clot formation

Critical period. Rest, ice, no rinsing. Bite firmly on gauze if provided. Minimal activity.

Days 2–5
Peak swelling

Swelling and bruising peak. Normal. Soft diet, ice continues day 2 only. Pain managed with medication.

Days 6–14
Rapid improvement

Swelling reduces noticeably. Stitches dissolve (or removed at day 7–10 if non-absorbable).

Weeks 3–8
Bone healing

External appearance normal. Internal bone consolidation continues. Diet gradually normalised.

Clear Aligners · Post-Surgical Orthodontics · Retainers

Clear Aligner & Retainer Aftercare

Aligner treatment requires consistent daily habits. The most common reason treatment takes longer than planned is inconsistent wear time — everything else is simple.

22h minimum daily wear time
Do
  • Wear your aligners for 20–22 hours every day — remove only to eat, drink (anything other than water), and brush
  • Change to the next tray on the scheduled day — even if the current one still feels tight
  • Clean aligners daily with a soft brush and cold water — or with the aligner cleaning kit provided
  • Brush and floss thoroughly before reinserting aligners — food trapped under the tray causes decay
  • Store aligners in the case provided whenever removed — they are easy to lose or damage
  • Wear retainers every night indefinitely after treatment is complete — this is permanent
  • Send progress photos every 6–8 weeks as requested by our team
Don't
  • Do not eat or drink (except plain water) while wearing aligners — food and coloured drinks stain and distort the plastic
  • Do not rinse aligners with hot water — it warps the plastic permanently
  • Do not skip aligner changes — even one missed week delays the overall plan
  • Do not leave aligners out for extended periods without contacting us — teeth shift quickly
  • Do not stop wearing retainers after treatment — there is no "safe" period when you no longer need them
  • Do not clean aligners with toothpaste — most pastes are abrasive and scratch the clear plastic
Lost or broken aligner? Contact us immediately via WhatsApp with a photograph. Do not skip to the next tray without guidance — the correct response depends on how far through the series you are.
When to contact us urgently

Emergency situations — call or WhatsApp immediately

Most post-treatment discomfort is normal and manageable at home. But some symptoms require prompt attention. If you experience any of these, contact us the same day — do not wait.

Contact Us Now

General aftercare principles

Applicable to all treatments, at all times.

01

Oral hygiene is non-negotiable

Brush twice daily and floss once daily regardless of which treatment you have had. Plaque accumulation at restoration margins is the primary cause of long-term failure — not the materials or the technique.

02

Regular check-ups protect your investment

Every restoration, implant, and veneer benefits from periodic professional review. A dentist can identify issues at the margin level — invisible to you — before they become costly problems. Six-monthly check-ups are recommended for all patients.

03

A night guard is essential if you grind

Bruxism — nighttime grinding and clenching — is the single most common cause of premature failure in crowns, veneers, bridges, and composite bonding. If prescribed a night guard, wear it every night without exception. It protects years of work.

04

Contact us before your local dentist makes changes

If a dentist at home wants to alter, adjust, or replace any work done at Kocaqi Dental — ask them to contact us first. We can provide full documentation, specifications, and advice that ensures any local follow-up is coordinated with your original treatment plan.

05

Diet matters more than most people realise

Acidic drinks, hard foods, and chewing ice are responsible for a disproportionate amount of dental damage. These apply to natural teeth and restorations equally. Your new smile is an investment — treat it like one.

06

Smoking compromises everything

Smoking affects implant integration, graft healing, gum health, whitening results, and overall healing rates. If you smoke, reducing or stopping is the single most impactful lifestyle change you can make for your dental health — and your general health.
